Quick facts

Latin nameGorgassia silneri

Size: 96 cm

Habitat: sandy seabeds near reefs

Distribution: Red Sea endemic

Garden eels are small burrowing fish that live in large colonies on sandy seabeds.
They spend most of their time partially emerged, feeding on plankton and retreating quickly when disturbed. Garden eels remain anchored in their burrows and extend their bodies into the current to feed. Their spacing within the colony helps reduce competition.
